Most vacations to Alaska are aboard one of the many cruise ships that spend May through early October cutting through the pristine glacier-fed waters. It's with good reason: this is the easiest way to get a glimpse into Alaska's unbelievable scenery and wildlife, as well as a chance to meet the outdoor-loving locals who reside in the port towns year round and share stories of the nearest hospital or mall being in Canada, just "a couple hundred miles away" -- a stone's throw in Alaskan mileage.
From aboard a ship, visitors will take in snow-capped mountains, icebergs and glaciers, and may even spot whales and sea lions swimming nearby. These are certainly cruises where the ships themselves take a backseat to what Alaska has to offer, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in America's last frontier.
