This Dutch city is one of the most family-friendly cities in Europe, filled with bicycles, boats and enough kids activities to fill up at least a week's vacation. And, unlike more popular European destinations like London and Paris, Holland's capital, and largest city, is compact and easy to get around.
Set on the Amstel River, Amsterdam is carved up by canals, which create postcard-pretty views throughout the city. These waterways were recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city has a long-standing reputation for liberal politics and social views, which includes legal drugs and prostitution. Cycling is a tradition long-associated with the city and Amsterdam has, for decades, been a model for successfully creating a traffic system safe for cyclists, cars, trams and pedestrians.
As home to many of the Old Masters, Amsterdam is an art-lover's paradise and kids are catered for too, with special tours and exhibits. Even serious sites like the Anne Frank House offer interactive ways to make the experience more kid-friendly.
For families keen on outdoor and sporty activities, as well as those who enjoy culture and history, Amsterdam is a must-do vacation spot.
