One of Florida's best-kept beach secrets, Anna Maria Island (often abbreviated AMI) appeals to families with more than just sand and sun. The 7-mile-long island holds three distinct communities, each with its own hometown feel. There's no big-chain restaurants or hotels here.

The southernmost town, Bradenton Beach, is probably most family-friendly, given its relative affordability and overall casual attitude. Holmes Beach feels slightly more upscale and artsier, while northernmost Anna Maria has a bit of a quirky vibe, like the eccentric rich aunt of the family. It has the lightest selection of hotel/resort accommodations; the majority of visitors stay in rental cottages and homes.

No matter which community you choose to plant yourself for your family getaway, you will be pleased to find an abundant number of places to eat and stay right on the beach. Anna Maria Island is Florida beach culture at its finest, and you can often go the entire day with your toes in the sand.
