Families will love:

  • Amazing Caribbean beaches
  • Low-key, underdeveloped island
  • Snorkeling, sailing and scuba diving

You probably haven't heard a lot about Antigua -- to the point where most people pronounce it wrong. It's An-tee-ga, not An-tee-gwa. This little Caribbean island has remained a well-kept secret, despite its status as a playground of the rich and famous (Oprah, Eric Clapton and Giorgio Armani are among the luminaries who have houses here).

And it's no wonder they love it. This Caribbean isle is blessed with a varied, picture-perfect geography -- a few mountains, some lush rain forest, and a few barren desert-like spots. But its crowning jewel is its coastline, riddled with 365 reef-protected stretches of powder-soft sand with gentle, kid-friendly surf.
The island still retains a charming, British flavor, thanks to its years as part of the British Empire (it's still considered part of the Commonwealth, but achieved independence in 1981). And in fact, you'll find that most of your fellow tourists come from the UK or Canada -- Americans haven't quite caught up to Antigua's charms.

Dress is pretty conservative on the island -- you'll want to don a cover-up when you leave the beach, and dinners require some dressing up (no cutoff jeans allowed!). But in general, you'll find that Antigua's a pretty low-key place, without a raging nightlife, overcrowding or overdevelopment -- yet -- though there's plenty of new resorts and vacation villas springing up along its shores.

If you're looking for a locale where you can enjoy a little quality time with your family -- and some spectacular beaches to loll on -- Antigua may be right up your alley.
