The easiest way to arrive is a flight to Denver that connects to Aspen's intimate airport, Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), which is about 10 minutes from Aspen. The Colorado Mountain Express and other ground transportation from Denver (DEN) are also available (a four-hour drive). Most hotels provide free shuttle service from Aspen airport.
The Art of Smart Timing
Most think of Aspen as a winter destination, and it certainly has the skier/snowboarder set in mind with people filling the streets from December through March in ski gear. But the mountain destination is also great for exploration in the summer and fall months, when there are less crowds, more moderate temperatures, and outdoor adventures like hot air ballooning, hiking, biking, rafting and more all in the snowless hills.
Getting Around
Aspen is a part of four mountain communities, all within about 10 minutes from each other, including Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk. Free bus service, courtesy of the Roaring Fork Authority, connects each mountain with multiple and easy-to-find stops and ski racks lining the outside of the bus to carry gear. The service operates every 30 minutes on the quarter and three-quarter hour, beginning at 6:15 a.m. at Rubey Park and concluding with the last shuttle departing at 2:15 a.m.
