Castel Sant’Angelo

Lungotevere Castello 50, Rome, 00193

Near Vatican City, along the Ponte Sant’Angelo, is the massive former castle and prison of the Vatican. Underground tunnels could take Vatican pope into the castel for safekeeping. Constructed in AD 123, structure stands guard over the Tiber River, and children have plenty of room in which to run around while taking it in. Open from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. every day but Monday, the castle is often less crowded than other Roman sights and does not require much time to visit.
