Historic Columbia River Highway

State Highway 30, Troutdale, 97060, OR

Work on America’s first planned scenic byway began in 1913, hugging the cliffs above the Columbia River Gorge and curving through forests. It invited the first generation of automobile travelers to explore scenic waterfalls and enjoy the ride past carved cliffs and through pretty valleys. Today, the 80-mile stretch from Troutdale to The Dalles includes plenty of hikes and diversions beginning with sweeping views at Chanticleer Point and at Vista House at Crown Point.

Our suggestion: wear the kids out seeing the series of seven waterfalls, then let them nap or plug into music while parents enjoy the scenic drive from Hood River or The Dalles for family-friendly cafes and diversions.
