Mount Hood

U.S. Highway 26 and Highway 35, Hood River, 97031, OR

No matter how you approach this mountain, it’s a gorgeous drive up and offers chances to make snowballs or even ski year-round. There are few things as strange as watching skiers head for the lift in the middle of August. If you’re just sightseeing, head for Timberline Lodge, a historic gem with daily tours and informational brochures on its unique craftsmanship. You can also walk up to the snowfield or take the chairlift for a scenic trip up the mountain. If you’re in the mood to hit the slopes, there are three additional places to ski: Mount Hood Skibowl, which is the closest to Portland; Cooper Spur Ski Area with mostly beginner runs and tubing; and Mount Hood Meadows, which is the largest ski area. The Skibowl also includes the Mount Hood Adventure Park with a zipline, alpine slide, rock wall, horseback riding, tree top action zone, mini-golf and Aqua Rollers (human hamster balls).
