Old Town Alexandria

Alexandria, 22314, VA

Founded in the early 18th century, Alexandria is a city rich in history. A fundamental seaport throughout the colonial period, Alexandria played host to many of America’s great heroes and founding fathers. For instance, Alexandria is the hometown of George Washington, our country’s first president. It is said that Thomas Jefferson entertained guests at Gadsby’s Tavern. The Edmonson Sisters, famous for their roles in the abolishment of slavery, became national celebrities after they were caught attempting to escape Alexandria.

Today, Alexandria’s Old Town is an essential stop for tourists visiting the area. The Old Town is a great location for families, full of activities and fun things to do and see. Hop on one of the several riverboat tours provided by the Potomac Riverboat Company, check out the “Alexandria’s Footsteps of the Past Ghost Tours,” or if you find yourself there on a beautiful Saturday morning, swing by the Farmers Market over in Market Square. For the kids, check out Alexandria Archeology, or send them on the Alexandria Tours Kids’ Scavenger Hunt.
