Taughannock Falls State Park

Trumansburg, 14886, NY

Taughannock Falls State Park is one of those rare, “something for everyone” family destinations. Widely regarded as one of the Northeast’™s best state parks, it is sure to impress any family looking to enjoy some time in the great outdoors.

An abundance of wonderful, pet-friendly trails are great for hiking and transform Fido’s afternoon walk into an exciting and joyous occasion. The trails, mellow enough for hikers of different skill ranges, surround the park’s main attraction: Taughannock Falls.

This massive fall, one of the largest single-drop waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains, is a whole 33 feet higher than Niagara Falls. But if your family is coming expressly to check out this breathtaking example of natural and scientific beauty, we suggest doing so in the spring. The falls’ stream tends to slow or even dry out completely in the summer months.

The park also borders the crystal clear Cayuga Lake, which is perfect for swimming and fishing. Or spend a beautiful summer day on Cayuga’s beach, ideal for lazily lounging around and soaking up rays. And for those looking for more of an off-shore excursion, there is also a boat ramp!

If the kids get tired of “roughing it” at one of the park’s many campsites, they’ll be pleased to know Ithaca is less than a half hour away.
