The friendly folks at Beaver Creek Hiking Center are on hand to recommend local trails for you and the kids in the summer months. Better yet, join the knowledgeable guides for a group hike. Kids are welcome during the complimentary guided nature loop at the top of the Centennial Express lift, or book a private guide to take the whole family on an easy hike through aspen groves along on-mountain trails. Older 'tweens and teens might appreciate longer adventure hikes or even a trek up their first Colorado 14er (a 14,000-foot peak). All guided hikes include the use of day-packs and boots, hiking poles, rain gear, bottled water and granola bars. For a fee, you can have the Hiking Center pack a picnic lunch for you, and you can rent child-carriers, too.

Behind Chapel Square in Traer Creek
Avon, CO • 970-754-4636
Held Thursday nights from the end of June through mid-August, this is no rinky-dink rodeo. About 2,000 locals and visitors turn out weekly to watch incredibly talented cowboys (and cowgirls!) compete in such events as bronc riding, team roping, bull riding and more. The announcers and rodeo clowns are incredibly entertaining, plus visiting children can even get into the act by signing up for mutton' bustin and the calf scramble! There's fun for the whole family with pony rides, face painting, a mechanical bull, and plenty of food and drink vendors outside of the riding arena. The rodeo lot is located in Avon; free shuttle service is available from Beaver Creek Village. This is definitely a don't-miss event if you're in Beaver Creek on a Thursday night in the summer months.

Smack in the middle of Beaver Creek Village Plaza (really, you can't miss it) is the Black Family Ice Rink, open year-round (yup, even in the summer months). Make a few turns on your own skates or rent them from the little booth next to Base Mountain Sports; helmets are also available. The rink is typically open noon to 9 p.m. in the winter months, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the summer months, and it's closed for a few weeks during the shoulder-seasons of spring and fall. Skating is fun for the whole family when you need a break from the ski slopes or want to cool off a bit in July.

Beaver Creek Mountain
Beaver Creek, CO • 970-754-5368
Kids only need to be 36 inches tall (no age minimum) to sit in a tube and go flying down Haymaker Tubing Hill afternoons during the ski season. There are four lanes of sliding fun, the hill is open from 1 p.m. to early evening, and it's a great apres-ski activity or something to do for the non-skiers in your group. Don't worry, you don't need to schlep your tube up the hill; it's served by the Buckaroo Express Gondola.

Beaver Creek Ski Mountain
Beaver Creek, CO • 970-754-5464
Beaver Creek Ski & Snowboard School is renowned for its children's program. Full-day group lessons are available for kids as young as three years old; children need to be 7 to start snowboarding lessons. Children and teens are grouped by age and ability, and novice skiers start out on their own beginner terrain at the base of the mountain and on the "bunny hill," accessible by the eight-person Buckaroo Express gondola. The kid-friendly gondola ride is less than four minutes long -- perfect for short attention spans!

After ski instruction in the morning, kids in group lessons gather at The Ranch at the top of the gondola for a healthy lunch; wireless touch-screens at the tables allow instructors to stay seated with the kids while placing food orders. Typically organic produce and hormone-free dairy and meat products are served. Then it's back out on the mountain for more ski and snowboard fun with their new friends!

Kids love the Adventure Zones that are found throughout the ski mountain, where they might make turns through teepees, zoom across bridges, or even scoot through "caves" or tunnels. Your kids' instructors will likely lead them to these entertaining spots, but if you're skiing with the kiddos as a family and want to find them on the hill, look for the smiley faces that mark the zones on the Beaver Creek trail map.
