![]() | Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center Western Highway 30 Belize City, Belize • 501-220-8004 If you really want to see a jaguar, the best place is going to be at the Belize Zoo, located about 30 minutes outside Belize City. Also behind bars and glass, as you want them to be, are the boa constrictor and lethal Fer-de-Lance. The zoo has a great collection of the beautiful birds of Central America. There are also overnight accommodations here as well as children's playground, but no restaurant. Pack a picnic lunch. Best For: Tots (0-2)•Kids (3-6)•Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
![]() | Boca Del Rio Park San Pedro Town, Belize This public park is one of the most fun places for small children in all of Belize. Located about two miles north of San Pedro, the playground includes lots of water slides and swings that dump children into the cool, shallow water of the bay. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the day. Best For: Tots (0-2)•Kids (3-6)•Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
![]() | Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve 12 Fort Street Belize City, Belize • 501-223-5004 This is the world's first area devoted to the protection of the jaguar, the largest cat found in the Americas. There's a small, but effective education center at the preserve, but most of the experience is simply hiking the miles of trails. If you really want to see a jaguar, plan to spend the night here in some of the rustic lodging available to guests. Although actual sightings of jaguar are rare, you'll hear and maybe see lots of the jungle activity in which the jaguar thrives. You can also rent inner tubes for quick float along the river. Best For: Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
![]() | Hol Chan Marine Preserve Caribena Street San Pedro Town, Belize • 501-226-2247 This is the first national marine preserve in Belize and easily one of the most exciting destinations for snorkeling, diving and swimming with manta rays and sharks. Located just four miles south of Ambergris Caye, you must hire an authorized guide service to take you there from either San Pedro or Caye Caulker. Those approved by government agencies can be found at the Visitor Center on Caribena Street in San Pedro. Some services are via motorboat, but others are on catamarans, which makes a nice morning or afternoon excursion complete with picnic lunch. Best For: Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
![]() | Mayan Ruins Belize City, Belize • 501-822-2106 Most resorts and tour operators offer excursions to the more impressive and easily accessible Mayan Ruins. Belize is not that large of a country, so a daytrip to most any of them is reasonable and most of them are located in the interior. Among the most prominent are Xunantunich, a village with 25 buildings and well-done museum located on the western side of the country. And just south of San Ignacio is Caracol, considered one of the largest sites of the Mayan empire. Ruins are not places for strollers or toddlers. Families should be prepared for some serious stair-stepping. Best For: Kids (7-9)•Tweens (10-12)•Teens (13+) |
