Many maps and textbooks still refer to it as British Honduras, but the Central American country of Belize, population just 300,000 will turn 30 years old in 2011.
Along with its independence has come Belize's popularity as a premiere diving destination, an environmentally diverse country, and an easy-access vacation for North Americans to escape the cold and misery of winter.
It is Central America's only English speaking nation, where the world's first preserve to protect the jaguar was established in 1986, and the home to the second longest barrier reef in the world.
If your child is a budding Indiana Jones, Belize will be like visiting a candy land. More than 600 archeological sites are scattered throughout the tiny country, some of them discovered less than 10 years ago.
While older kids will really grow from a visit to this Central American nation, much of what Belize has to offer -- scuba diving, archeological history, rain forest exploration -- will not be appreciated by younger children. But the beach and sand? There's plenty of that.
