Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro
•Bellingham, WA •360-647-5593
Known for its award-winning ales, Boundary Bay is a family-friendly bistro with an outdoor deck and all-ages Beer Garden that hosts summer concerts. The brewpub partners with local farmers and food suppliers for fresh pub eats, including burgers (try the lamb!), sandwiches, salmon and pasta. Kids will find their own menu of similar fare, but fashioned just for them. Be aware Boundary Bay is popular and doesn't take reservations on weekends, so arrive before 6 p.m. to avoid a wait.
Ciao Thyme Café
•Bellingham, WA •360.733.1267
If you happen to be visiting on a weekday and you have older kids with sophisticated palates, don't miss this little gem for lunch. It's a cute, casual place (order at the counter) with family-style seating, a changing menu and a chef who takes local to another level with seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and unique twists on whatever he's cooking up, whether squash soup, bacon burgers or spring slaw. This is one of Bellingham's best-kept secrets. Open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
La Fiamma Wood Fire Pizza
•Bellingham, WA •360-647-0060
A family-favorite, La Fiamma serves up gourmet pies with wood-fired crust and toppings such as grilled flank steak, smoked mozzarella and lamb sausage in a vibrant atmosphere. Crayons and coloring paper arrive with your server along with a simple but crowd-pleasing kids' menu of buttered noodles, spaghetti and personal pizzas. For extra fun, ask for a chunk of dough for kids to play with, or perch them at the counter to watch the pie process at work. Arrive early on weekends to beat the crowds.
Mallard Ice Cream
•Bellingham, WA •360-734-3884
Youngsters of all ages flock to Mallard even in the winter for homemade artisan scoops. You can order traditional flavors if that's how you lean, but the specialty flavors do a brisk business -- try plum, lavender or cayenne. Cozy up on the couches or perch at a table on a red stool. On warm days, the shop's front walls slide open to the sidewalk for a festive, summery feel.
Old Town Café
•Bellingham, WA •360-671-4431
This icon's Teddy Bear pancake is a kid-favorite for breakfast. Known for its (mostly) vegetarian breakfast and lunch fare, the Old Town is true Bellingham, where you can order a tofu scramble or bacon, as your heart desires. Build your own omelet, try a hearty salad or dig into the Grilled Greek sandwich while your kids feast on grilled cheese or bean and cheese quesadillas. A small play area contains books and toys for the littlest visitors. Note: This café is very popular on weekends.
•Bellingham, WA •360-393-4837
You'll likely wonder why this authentic El Salvadoran restaurant is empty when you walk in, but don't let it worry you -- we think it may simply be due to the rockin' to-go business. Order the giant Wonder Burrito (big enough to share), the taco or tamale plate or try the traditional Salvadoran pupusas -- corn tortillas stuffed with beans, cheese or pork. Super Marios also has a popular food truck at 1422 N. Forest Street (cash only).
