Berkshires Family Friendly Restaurants
286 Main StreetGreat Barrington, MA 413-528-8100
Banish all thoughts from your head of pizza as junk food. The uber-popular Great Barrington pizza place (now with a branch in Pittsfield) has them lining out the door for its organic pies that sometimes seem less a pizza and more like a fresh salad on an organic sourdough plate. Of course, you can get them without all the green stuff if the kids blanch, and they'll still benefit from the yeast-free crusts and fresh mozzarella that makes the pizzas healthier than standard pizzas -- if you want them even more nutritious, order a crust made of spelt, a grain richer in vitamins, protein and fiber. Either way, Baba Louie's sweet garlicky pizza sauce makes them so delicious, the kids will never know the difference.
420 Stockbridge RoadGreat Barrington, MA 413-528-8282
The simple wooden booths at this Great Barrington mainstay lend themselves to loosening your collar getting comfortable whether you're a couple or a family of five. But there's nothing casual about the food preparation here, which starts with grass-fed beef and free-range chicken from around the Northeast and works house-brewed beer into recipes such as cheddar soup and barbecue chili. Did we mention the beer? The brewhouse in back cooks up everything from Berkshire Blonde to Blackbear Stout, so eco-friendly they are literally brewed with solar power.
777 Cold Spring Road Williamstown, MA 413-458-0123
Promising the "bounty of the Berkshires," Mezze has taken the dining caliber of the region up a farm-to-table notch, with locally sourced organic meats and vegetables served up at a stylish dining room a few miles south of Williamstown. It's only the latest transformation of Mezze, the creation of a local restaurateur of Greek-Moroccan descent who originally introduced tapas to the mountains more than a dozen years ago. Despite a sophisticated menu of the likes of pan-roasted bluefish and pork loin drizzled with bacon vinaigrette, the restaurant is as welcoming to families as to couples; if the kids get antsy, they can take a break with a stroll around three acres of bucolic grounds.
30 Main StreetStockbridge, MA 413-298-5545
The iconic New England inn located in the center of Stockbridge (look for it in one of Norman Rockwell's most famous paintings) has an equally iconic dining room full of crystal chandeliers, white tablecloths, and crisp wait service. The menu is full of New England classics (prime rib with popovers) as well as more creative spins (curried couscous and mushrooms); the kids' menu, meanwhile, offers home-cooked alternatives to chicken fingers and French fries with offerings including a mini turkey dinner and a kid's version of the inn's famous prime rib. The dress code of jackets and ties has been loosened here recently, but younger kids should still get the pep talk about "best behavior" before arrival.
26 Housatonic StreetLenox, MA 413-637-9192
If Betty and Veronica went to Tanglewood, they'd stop off first at this retro '50s hangout in downtown Lenox. It's the kind of joint that the whole family can agree on; we're talking burgers (both meat and bean), popcorn chicken, tuna melts and onion rings -- finished off with small-batch ice cream and gelato from Berkshire favorite SoCo Creamery. Best of all, nothing on the menu is over $10, so you can save your money for those high-priced symphony tickets.
