Reviews

Not Quite Poor, But Certainly Below Average

by BloomingMisfit

???????????????????? ????????: at 7 PM, I had to knock on the front door to the lobby before the desk clerk would come and unlock it for my entry. My roommate had already checked in the day before. Although he reported assistance with his bags down the long walk to the room, I had no such assistance or a second key! I did not even get directions to the room and lost my way twice. Not good.
????????????????: The room size is OK, with two full (it might have been queen) beds. The a/c unit worked very well; the water pressure was good and hot water comes relatively quickly. The towels are worn, and very rough; and somewhat discolored. The floor towel one of the days was actually ragged; and one of the days it was missing. The wash basin plug didn't work, so it drained slowly. The cupboard is overdue replacement: it is rotted at the base at one corner. The hangers in the room were inadequate for two people. There is no microwave or fridge (not a complaint - just an observation). To get ice, one has to make the walk back to the dining/cafeteria area. The windows don't close tightly, so this allowed a couple of flies and bugs to enter. My roommate saw a cockroach.
????????????????????????????: The staff is friendly (you'll scarcely find anything less in the Caribbean). The meals were tasty, and more than adequate. This one area is where Bird Rock excels - although this didn't hold true for each and every meal, but generally, this was satisfactory. Internet, however, sucked in a grand way. In the rooms, it was extremely weak and spotty; in the conference room, where you'd expect to find the strongest signals, it was absolutely non-existent. It was either weak or most times absent in the dining area as well, just across from the conference room. Incredible.
????????????????????????????: The grounds are well-kept. Yes, there are cats and hens and crowing roosters around, but I did not find them a problem; in fact, they added an island feeling.
????????????????????????????: I don't know what this hotel cost; I was a guest of the conference, and was paid for. However, low rates or not, I would opt not to stay here were I coming back to Basseterre for any reason of my own. I imagine that this is a family business; but I suggest some investment-money be poured into it to lift the standard. I predict a nice return on investment if this is done. Basseterre - and St Kitts in general - is too nice to not make the ROI generous. That Bird Rock sits right on the ocean front is a plus. I hope management gets that loan or investment injection and take it from here; if they did, I might be back.

Excellent Caribbean Value

I returned to St. Kitts and Bird Rock Beach hotel from 10-15 Sept 2019 to attend some Caribbean Premier League cricket matches. The hotel is locally owned and operated and reflects the friendliness and relaxed attitude you'll find throughout the island. The room I had was clean and comfortable; the bathroom was small but clean and had very hot water if you want it; and the air conditioning was excellent.

There were only a few other guests in the hotel because of the season but the restaurant/bar was open and the food was great. Of course it was prepared to order so it was not immediately presented like you'll find in the US but then again this is the Caribbean and it was just cooked!

The pool was clean although I enjoyed swimming in the ocean the best. I still do not dive but there were some divers there who all were raving about their dives and generally seemed to be having a great holiday.

The reviews about the lack of elevators is accurate so if you have trouble with steps I'd strongly recommend you ask for a ground floor room.

Overall this is not a great choice if you expect a US-style hotel but if you are looking for a friendly, truly Caribbean experience for a reasonable rate this is an excellent choice.
