Block Island Family Friendly Restaurants

A family-owned establishment for more than 30 years, Aldo's offers an Italian menu particularly strong in seafood dishes -- including seafood pesto, scampi fra diavolo, and a delectable fried calamari with spicy banana peppers. Kids will find plenty to like here in chicken fingers, burgers, and pizzas -- to say nothing of the attached ice-cream parlor for desserts.

You won't find any pretentions at Finn's, a Block Island institution for its fried seafood and raw bar just steps from the ferry terminal at Old Harbor. We're talking boiled lobster, stuffed clams and chowder, and of course breaded-and-friend fisherman's platters. Prime seating is the outdoor patio, which virtually defines summer dining on the island; if you aren't lucky enough to score a spot there, grab some food to go at the window and head upstairs for overflow seating on the deck (without table service). Inside, the restaurant has a convivial bar scene.

Kids could be completely entertained here just by the wall decor, which includes deer heads, mounted fish, and of course, a giant hammerhead shark over the main dining room. Staff goes out of their way to keep kids happy, providing paper and crayons to keep them busy until the food comes. Adults, meanwhile, will be kept happy by potent martini drinks. The whole family will come together for seafood fresh off the boat, including feather-light fish and chips and blackened fish sandwiches as well as steaks, salads and fajitas. The restaurant is located across from Crescent Beach and makes a good stop after working up an appetite from all the salt air of a beach day.

Operating for only a few years, Harry's has fast become an island favorite for its bold flavors, big portions and wonderful views over the harbor from Post Office hill. If your kids have adventurous palates, the whole family is in for a treat here -- with curried mussels, a house-special pad Thai, and an out-of-this-world jerk chicken sandwich among the standouts. Meals are ultracasual, served at diner booths or outside picnic tables with a view over the harbor and the ferry.

An all around crowd-pleaser right on the main drag of Old Harbor across from the ferry terminal, Mohegan offers surprisingly sophisticated pub fare at a good value. It's one of the only places on-island that bridges the divide between fast-food/pizza-type spots and upscale hotel restaurants that seem to increase in price every season. In addition to perfectly cooked-to-order burgers and fish sandwiches, the menu veers into Asian and South American influences, such as hoison barbecue chicken, scallop ceviche, and a particularly tasty Argentinean ribeye steak. Ambience is crowded and casual, with children welcomed without missing a beat. Of course, grown-ups will appreciate the microbrews brewed on premises, including a killer IPA.
