The Art of Smart Timing
Like most Caribbean islands, high season is mid-December through mid-April, and low season is end of April to mid-December.
Book in advance for rooms during festivals, including the Spring Regatta, end of March beginning of April; windsurfing competition in June and July; and the new, first-ever BVI Kite Jam, March 1-5, 2010. 'Tweens and teens should enjoy watching well-known kite-boarders ride the waves and the wind.
Getting Around
The main airport, the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (EIS), is located on Beef Island and is connected to Tortola by a bridge. American, Continental, Delta and Liat are among the carriers. Ferries provide service from the U.S.V. I.'s Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, to Road Town, Tortola, and to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Ferries also go from Tortola to Anegada and back. Check the schedules. Clair Aero provides flights from Tortola to Anegada. 284-495-2271
Taxis and rental cars are available on Tortola, Virgin Gorda and even Jost Van Dyke. Although, on tiny Jost Van Dyke, you might want to make prior arrangements.
Also, many families who know how to navigate will charter their own boats. The Moorings is one of the largest charter boat companies and they offer both bareboat and skippered charters.
