When Cason J. Callaway and his wife, Virginia, started turning their undeveloped property in Pine Mountain, Georgia, into a beautiful garden to share with family and friends, it didn't take long for them to revise that stance, instead desiring to share it with people everywhere. After careful planning and a lot of hard work, Callaway Gardens opened to the public on May 21, 1952. Through the years, Callaway Gardens has added more attractions, activities and even accommodations for visitors to experience and enjoy.

The hard work started by the Callaways quickly paid off, with Callaway Gardens welcoming its 1 millionth visitor on June 21, 1956, and greeting its 5 millionth visitor on April 22, 1965. Today, 500,000 people visit Callaway Gardens throughout the year, and they come for the beautiful flowers, to dance with the butterflies, to bike and hike the trails, to tee off, to see more than 1 million holiday lights, and so much more. At Callaway Gardens, families can be as relaxed or as active as they want, with something for family members of all ages to do.
