Cancun's beach is back, at least for now. Hurricane Wilma devastated the Yucatan peninsula in 2005, cutting the shore to the width of a mere lounge chair or two. In the latter part of 2009, the Mexican government completed a mega-million dollar reclamation project that broadened the beach by 50-plus feet, all along the hotel zone's strip, a stretch of fifteen miles. While training Mother Nature remains difficult, hoteliers and tourism officials hope the efforts will keep the beach at its best.
Cancun's shores bloom with high-rise hotels, creating a bustle that teens and twenty-somethings find especially exciting. Except for March and April, when Cancun fills with partying undergraduates on spring break, the area has much to offer families, from all-inclusive to luxury hotels to a variety of restaurants. Snorkeling, diving and shopping are also available, as well as easy access to the Yucatan's attractions.
