The hotel's 50-foot horizon-edge salt-water swimming pool is heated year-round and features a retractable glass roof, which makes it an indoor-outdoor pool. The pool adjoins the spa and a one-room fitness center with weights and cardiovascular equipment for adults. Beyond the pool is a rooftop sun terrace with a tiny freshwater children's splash pool and plenty of lounge chairs. The spa/pool/fitness center area is open daily from 6 a.m. (7 a.m. on weekends) to 10 p.m.

When you venture out on the town, you'll find plenty of options. Even for those within walking distance, consider hiring a rickshaw cab (a three-wheeled bicycle-like contraption that has a two-seater carriage for passengers) when little feet get tired. Rickshaws (also called pedicabs) are easier to get in the historic district than standard cabs -- and they're a lot more fun. For attractions and sights within driving distance, you can either take a cab or rent a car (at the hotel itself). Another fun transportation option is a horse-drawn carriage tour.

There are a number of attractions located within walking distance of Charleston Place:

South Carolina Aquarium
This new attraction, jutting 2,000 feet out into the Charleston harbor, is home to more than 800 sea critters, including sharks, sea turtles, stingrays and even an albino alligator. Five days a week, the aquarium gives behind-the-scenes tours of its Sea Turtle Hospital (where rescued sea turtles receive medical attention before they're released back into the ocean). The aquarium (a 20-minute walk from the hotel) also offers monthly toddler story times, animal encounters, a 4D theater, and an interactive dive show.

Charleston Harbor Cruises
Choose a 90-minute harbor cruise, or a 30-minute cruise plus a one-hour stop at Fort Sumter (where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861). Spirit Line Cruises depart from Liberty Square near the aquarium, a 20-minute walk from the hotel. The same company also offers dinner cruises around the harbor.

Children's Museum of the Low Country
This museum, which just opened in 2003 for children from 3 months to 12 years, includes eight hands-on interactive exhibits, such as an art room, a splash-happy water exhibit, a pirate ship and a medieval castle (complete with secret passageways). The museum offers a variety of year-round camps for potty-trained kids ages 3 to 5 (mornings only) as well as for those ages 5 to 7 (full-day). It's just a 20-minute walk from the hotel. (Closed Mondays.)
