Long gone are the days of bare-bones accommodations. All rooms feature air-conditioning, a balcony or patio, refrigerator, telephone and Internet connection and a safe. The beds have plush mattresses, oversized pillows and comforters. Most rooms are designed for two people and maybe three if one is a small child. Some of the purple faux suede chaise lounges in the rooms open up to accommodate a third person. Club Med provides cribs and a baby bathtub. At Club Med kids can get their own room and still pay the children's rate; that's nice. Some of the properties rooms are adjoining.
What makes Club Med's rooms less "deluxe" than at other resorts is often the workmanship. Sometimes, the plastering is rough, the painting sloppy, and the finishes basic. However, Club Med's accommodations are very comfortable. And at a Club Med, you won't spend much time in your room. Parents with toddlers should be aware that many rooms have two tiled steps that lead down to the refrigerator and the balcony doors. With fast-crawling kids, consider a way to block these steps.
The room decor runs to hot pinks and purples. When the resort re-opened, 200 of the 384 rooms were enlarged to 416 square feet. Some, like our deluxe room (420-square feet) in the Turquesa building, come with 75-square foot balconies, a wonderful outdoor space. Our room also had a second balcony overlooking the lagoon. Turquesa is conveniently located near the pool and not far from La Hacienda, the "main" restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Topacio building is close to the Mini-Club and some of its rooms overlook the beach. Standard rooms are 345-square feet and some have 75-square-foot balconies.
Also, Club Med Cancun went upscale in 2006 by opening the Jade building. Jade's 18 oceanview suites are about 691-square feet and have large balconies. The decor mixes sleek contemporary furnishings of high, bronze headboards and curvy red couches with Mexican carved wooden benches plus some retro 60s touches such as a large sunburst clock wall sculpture and a turquoise rug. Three of the 18 suites are reserved for families.
The amenities and services in the Jade suites mimic those found in luxury hotels. Rooms come with bathrobes, free Wi-Fi access, fresh flowers, turn down service, a stocked mini-fridge, laundry service, room service and the use of the building's concierge room with its hors d'oeuvres and drinks and the services of the concierge.
