Growing up on the southern coast of Maine, I'll admit I harbor a little prejudice; but from my point of view, it's one of the best places for a family vacation in the country. Dotted with scenic and friendly little towns, lots of free beaches and old-fashioned charm, Maine's rocky shoreline draws millions of families every year. So while these coastal villages are every bit as charming as you've imagined them, imagine them a little more crowded! There are so many ways to experience coastal Maine. Whether it is in a luxury oceanfront resort with fine dining, sparkling pools and a kid's program, or in a secluded cabin on one of Maine's small islands, it's a wonderful place for kids. Although the state is vacation-worthy in any season, coastal Maine is typically a summer and fall destination; and you'll find that many of the spots listed in this article go into hibernation during the winter months. Be sure to inquire about opening and closing dates when making your family's arrangements.
