For eggs, omelettes, cereal, and a great selection of fresh fruit like ripe mangos, pineapples, papaya, and small bananas, sit outdoor on the hotel patio at Antigua. More casual fare like pastries can be found at Casa del Cafe, the resident coffee house. For lunch, La Castilla offers a good selection of sandwiches, salads, and grilled fish, all served with the requisite gallo pinto (black beans and rice) and fried plantains. They also feature a decent children's menu with mac and cheese, pizza, grilled chicken, spaghetti, and hot dogs.
Our favorite restaurant in the hotel was La Isabella, housed in a narrow room with short ceiling to give it a look of a wine cellar. The menu features a vast selection of tapas, but the highlight when we were there was an acoustic guitarist and three flamenco dancers. There's nothing like dinner with serious floor pounding, entertainment the children had never seen before and found fascinating. After all, this is one of the main reasons we travel with the kids. To open their eyes to a world they would not normally see.
Outside of the Marriott, head to the upscale neighborhood of Escazu for tasty Peruvian/Italian food at La Divina Comida. Kids will like the selection of cheeses, while mom and dad can dive into the seafood ceviche, including the yummy salmon with artichoke hearts. There's a vast selection of pastas for the children, including a fruit de mare, and tasty option for the parents like beef carpaccio. Everyone will enjoy the special dessert at the restaurant, pineapple flambe.
If you want to head into San Jose (a 20-minute drive) for an excellent meal, one of my favorite restaurants is at the boutique hotel, Grano de Oro. Inside the century-old Victorian estate, antiques blend with contemporary art and sculpture created by Costa Ricans. Lush greenery abounds indoors, and the soothing sounds of water can be heard cascading down the Italianate fountains while you dine. For dinner, start with thinly sliced salmon drizzled with lemon or a heart of palm, asparagus, and avocado salad. The entrees include filet mignon filled with creamy gorgonzola cheese or sweet sea bass topped with macadamia nuts and orange glace. Save room for desserts like pina colada cheesecake or banana ice cream sprinkled with coconut and rum.
