Mixed feelings

3 night stay. So you understand my perspective, I travel 50% of the time for work. HHonors Diamond for over a decade. I accepted a challenge from Marriott Bonvoy if I stay 15 nights they’ll give me Platinum. This is my 3rd Bonvoy stay in 2 weeks. I did the Aloft at SAT airport, the other Courtyard and now this. All 3 were not at a Hilton standard. I also assume this hotel is barely retaining their right to be a Marriott brand based on the condition of the room. The $71 per night price is fair, however. Most courtyards are 50% more.

The positive:
- comfortable, clean bed
- friendly staff
- they make the best of what they have
- I don’t recall paying less than $80 per night since 1995. I think it’s fair based on the old structure. This is a reflection on the owner, not the staff. The staff is outstanding.
- the room was cleaned well

The critical:
- this hotel is tired. It’s the type that becomes a Days Inn or Motel 6 conversion in a few years.
- musty smell from the old HVAC systems. My room had corrosion and rust all over the bottom from poor humidity control.
- cracked tub and fixtures, with sloppy caulk jobs gives the impression that the hotel gave up and hired Super 8’s maintenance guy
-room was really dark. You spend 90 seconds just walking around turning on all the 40 watt bulbs at their individual switches so you can see.

Both Courtyards near the airport are about the same. Really low rates for a reason. If you’re a value shopper, they’ll work. For someone new to the brand, it’s not the best impression. I’m holding out hope but all 3 properties near the airport were not kept in the condition I’m used to.

Again, most important is that my room was clean, the people were great. All managers worked their tails off and the housekeepers were great. The concerns I have are lack of investment from owners. It’s hurting the Marriott brand. It’s unfair to the staff also.

Of course, this hotel had a beautiful lobby. They all do.

I recommend this place. They have an employee by the name of Mary Helen 10# is a great employee always helping out during breakfast and assisting everyone. She goes out of her way every morning. Mary Ellen greets you in the morning with her beautiful smile and wishes you a good morning and good day. She even blesses you when you are leaving. Every business needs this kind of employee. Job well done Mary Helen. Very friendly love this place.
