We "dropped anchor" at the Yacht Club for one week (myself, DH, DS8, DD5, DD3). We had been to Walt Disney World 5 or 6 times with our children over the years. We started with camping at the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds, then jumped up on the more +pricing totem pole to the all-Star Resorts, then jumped again to the Grand Floridian, where we had stayed the previous 2 times. At first we booked the GF again for this trip, but then we decided to try a new hotel, but still considered a deluxe Disney experience. There was a negligible prices difference between the two resorts (GF and YC -- I think YC was $10 cheaper per night, but when you are paying $300+/night, this is essentially no discount). Of course, our kids were thrilled with both resorts! The Yacht Club pools are spectacular...winding lazy rivers, sand-bottomed pools, and a snack house right there by the water's edge. The weather was beautiful, and the staff was wonderfully kind. But my husband and I missed the luxurious feel of the Grand Floridian. For the kids, there was no difference -- both had great pools and, after all, this is Disney! They never even mentioned the Grand Floridian or thought two cents about it. But my husband and I could feel a distinct difference in the hotel, activities, and other amenities, and so - for the same high price - we felt that we had made a mistake to move to the Yacht Club from the GF. This is not to take away from the Yacht club, which certainly provided a nice vacation, but it was like comparing the Ritz Carlton to a Disney-esque high-end Hilton. The GF has three on-site activities for kids (tea party, pirate adventure, cooking adventure); the on-site monorail service; a full orchestra playing upon return from the parks at night; several fabulous high-end on-site restaurants; character breakfasts; character dinners; fabulous pools with a waterfall....and the overall ambiance just felt higher-end. At the Yacht Club, we waited forever for the bus or ferry to take us to our destination; there was no on-site character dining; only one high-end restaurant to choose from; no orchestra; no on-site social kids activities (that I know of, anyway). I guess our hang-up was, we had paid the same price and forfeited the better, higher-end experience. But we did enjoy the Yacht Club, and are glad we tried something new, so now we will really feel confident booking the GF if we want a Deluxe Disney experience. We won't hem and haw again about "Well, maybe we should try....x or y or z"! No more wishy-washiness. It's the Grand Floridian for us at the Deluxe level. (Hmmmm....maybe we should try a moderate resort next!)
