Finger Lakes Family Friendly Restaurants
246 W. Willow StreetSyracuse, NY 315-476-4937
This down-home barbecue joint has the kind of busy, brick-wall and signs decor that'll keep kids entertained while they wait for their plates of sliders or mac-n-cheese, and you'll get to enjoy some fabulous barbecue of your own.
800 South Main StreetCanandaigua, NY 585-394-7070
You can spend a whole day in this grand center celebrating the culinary accomplishments of New York State. Sign up for culinary classes or wine tastings (with cider for the kids) on the first floor or make reservations for a swanky dinner, made from ingredients sourced throughout New York State, at the dining room upstairs. While the menu and the ambience may say "adults only," the restaurant is very accommodating to kids, offering an unpublished menu of kid-friendly fare and very sweet and attentive service. (Of course, if you can manage an evening away without the kids, this may well be the place to enjoy it.)
1 West Market StreetCorning, NY 607-936-1953
This Martha-Stewart-perfect, quaint cafe offers more than just delicious ice cream -- stop here for a great lunch of sandwiches and salads before you indulge in a scoop or three!
525 Taughannock BoulevardIthaca, NY 607-256-2628
The Boat Yard Grill, located on an inlet of Lake Cayuga, offers a gorgeous waterfront view and a menu filled with seafood and massive "two-handed" sandwiches. The restaurant's small-plates allow you to order grown-up food for your kids in lighter portions instead of going for the standard chicken fingers. Consider phoning ahead if you're planning to eat during peak times (like a Saturday night), so you can get placed on the waiting list for a table and possibly shave off a bit of time trying to entertain antsy kids.
75 Marshall StreetRochester, NY 585-360-2920
This eclectic eatery offers something for everyone on its menu -- whether the people in your party prefer gluten-free, vegan, or just like good food. The kids' menu veers away from the typical chicken fingers and mac-and-cheese with kid-friendly fare that actually features vegetables, like the veggies-and-hummus combo or the pesto-veggie melt. And if you prefer this type of food, don't miss the Saigon, the restaurant's signature dish, a delectable sandwich featuring house-smoked tofu and pickled cucumbers and carrots.
