Florida Keys Family Friendly Restaurants

Brunch brings the crowds for banana pancakes and benedicts at this colorful Key West restaurant in Old Bahama Village. Your older kids can busy themselves with rounds of ping-pong while waiting for their meals, while little kids can play in the sandbox on site or have fun following behind the resident chickens that peck around the sandy courtyard. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, too, and kids' menu items include grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta with butter or tomato sauce, kids' chicken, shrimp and steak (the restaurant doesn't have a fryer, so there are no fried things to tempt them -- all the better for healthy, family dining).

With a waterfront deck and indoor dining, too, JJ's Big Chill, as this popular Key Largo restaurant is known, manages to feel like a party to parents and a playground to kids (always a good thing). There's a great kids' menu, with things like chicken fingers, little pieces of fried mahi (fish fingers), baked mahi plates with French fries and vegetables, grilled cheese sandwiches and mini cheeseburgers. Have everyone change into bathing suits to play in the waterfront pool while waiting for the food to arrive tableside (day passes cost $10 per person -- five dollars of which can be put toward your food bill). And kids love playing the "claw game" to see if they can win a lobster (the restaurant cooks it for you if you win it). Don't miss the Key lime pie and apple cobbler for dessert. And bring your own towels if you plan to swim with the gang.

After a walk along Key West's harbor, where you can admire catamarans and sail boats and pop into a treasure coin shop or two, reward the family with a classic Key West treat. It's Key Lime pie, but with a more manageable (and walking-friendly) twist -- a frozen version, served on a stick. Just don't forget to snag a family-size share of napkins, too.

410 Wall StreetMallory Square, FL 305-295-2620
On the edge of Mallory Square, this atmospheric Cuban restaurant has outdoor seating that lets your gang feel a part of the action while keeping everyone somewhat contained behind the low, iron fence (you can opt to sit inside, too). Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) and pork chops marinated in key lime are adult favorites, or you can go with a selection of tapas for the table. Kids' items include fried shrimp, burgers and cheeseburgers and mini Cuban steak platters, all served with fries or plantain chips. There's often live Cuban music and salsa dancing to keep everyone entertained, too.
528 W. Front St.Key West, FL 305-292-7862
Grab a table on the rooftop patio of this Old Town restaurant specializing in local seafood and a very serious selection of mainstream and obscure rums from spots like Colombia, Guatemala and Haiti. The 'Lil Pirates kids' menu includes classics like PB&J, burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese and chicken fingers, and they'll get crayons and a coloring book to keep them entertained while you sample the finest rums from the islands.
83413 Overseas HighwayMile marker 83.5Islamorada, FL 305-664-4959
Kids five and under eat for free (discounted rate for kids 12 and under) at this beloved seafood buffet right on the fishing docks in Islamorada (arrive around four or five PM and you'll see the boats hauling off the day's catch, which usually includes some nicely sized mahi and snapper -- the kids will love to watch). Everything from crab legs and oysters to shrimp and mussels find a place on the buffet spread, and kid-friendly items include mashed potatoes, conch fritters, pizza and brownies.
