Nearby, the city's art district surrounds Las Olas Boulevard, where boutiques and galleries, as well as outdoor cafes and world-class restaurants beckon. In downtown, a larger-than-life discovery museum provides perfect rainy day activities. But it's the warm-weather and outdoor fun that make Fort Lauderdale a perfect family destination, with kayaking adventures, water sports, hiking in state parks, and fishing excursions.

We recently spent a week in Fort Lauderdale on a family vacation. We rented a private vacation home rental which turned out to be perfect for our needs! The home we rented offered us 4 bedrooms, full kitchen, Internet access, swimming pool and hot tub. It was the ideal set up for our family of 5! Half way through the week we let our kids invite friends to join us. So we had a group of 8 in all which made for quite a lively experience. The home was located north of Fort Lauderdale in the Pompano Beach area. We spent a day on Hollywood Beach. It was a terrific place to take teens, as it offers an electic group of shops and restaurants. The water was great! We rented the 4 seater bikes and peddled up and down the boardwalk. We spent another day playing in the water on Pompano Beach. The water was not as pretty as Hollywood Beach but it was still an enjoyable place to spend the day. If you are looking for waves to boogie board, you will need to go farther north up the coast towards Cocoa Beach. The waters in this area are calm with minimal waves. Our last day we took a road trip to the Florida Keys. It was quite a long drive down and we were somewhat disapointed when we crossed over into the Keys. We expected to see picturesque views of the water, but didn't as we were driving. You will need to drive as far as Marathon to see these views. But once there you will find beautiful beaches. Overall our trip was fantastic! We enjoyed our beach days and the warm Florida sunshine. The Fort Lauderdale airport is easy to get in and out of and not near as busy as flying through Miami. We would love to visit this area again! Read More Read Less
