Where should I go between Memphis,TN and Ashville,NC

Hello All,
I'm Planning a family trip for myself, husband and 10 year old son. We are planning a 2 1\2 week trip through Memphis,Tn, Ashville,NC, Atlanta, St Augustine, FL and Orlando, FL. I'm unsure of where to go for a day and a night in between Memphis and Ashville NC, For family fun where should I drive to smoky mountain area or Nashville? We are interested in historical sites and love national park sites or any unique activity to that area. Any one from that area have any suggestions?? How is the Andrew Jackson site near Nashville? Thank you! Ant feedback would be appreciated.

I live just south of Nashville ... and there is quite a lot you can do here ... Andrew Jackson's home (The Hermitage), Carnton Plantation (have you read Widow of the South?), Carter House, Belle Meade Plantation, Travelers Rest Plantation, civil war battlefield sites, Grand Ol' Opry, tours of the stars' homes, etc.
