The American Girl Place
Young girls will want to grab one of those Radio Flyers and head within easy walking distance to the first American Girl Place opened in America. Here, girls line the hallways to get their doll's hair washed and braided at the salon.

Of course, children's clothes are sold alongside doll clothes, so your daughter can dress exactly like her little friend. Then head over to teatime in the cafe to enjoy a two-tiered tray of lemon scones, sandwich triangles and cookies, all washed down with lemonade. The dolls get their own chairs too; too bad they can't pick up the tab!

Hancock Observatory
After lunch, take your very patient son 1,000 feet above the Magnificent Mile to the Hancock Observatory. In 39 seconds, the elevator zips up to the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building, rewarding you with excellent, panoramic views of the city and lake. Look to the south and spot that other tall skyscraper, the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), along with the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower.

Navy Pier
Then bring the Radio Flyer back to the hotel and taxi over to Navy Pier. A former shipping facility built in 1916, Navy Pier was reborn in 1995 as a family entertainment center. It quickly became a hit and is now the number one tourist attraction in Chicago, with more than eight million visitors a year. That said, it can get crowded in summer and it's overly commercial, but it's still worth a visit to ride the Ferris wheel over the water and play in the children's museum.

Bike Along Lake Michigan Shoreline
If you still have the energy, rent bikes at Navy Pier and pedal along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Heading south on a paved trail, you'll pass Buckingham Fountain, the Shedd Aquarium (also worthy of a stop), and Soldier's Field, home to the Chicago Bears. However, it's the jaw-dropping vista of the city skyline on your return trip that will have you reaching for your camera.

Enjoy The Ice Cream Man and Pool
Back at the hotel, schedule the ice cream man to visit your room as early as possible, and then work off the sugar at the indoor pool, the same pool that was featured in Home Alone 2.
