![]() | Galveston Railroad Museum 2602 Santa Fe Place Galveston, TX • 409-765-5700 Due to damage resulting from Hurricane Ike in 2008, the Galveston Railroad Museum continues the rebuilding process, so two of its major exhibits -- the display of model trains and the largest railroad dining china exhibit in the country -- are currently unavailable. However, guests of all ages will love roaming through a variety of train cars, including dining, mail and private cars. Visitors can also take a 15-minute, round-trip ride on the Harborside Express, an authentic MoPac-13895, short-bay-window caboose that travels from the museum down Harborside Drive and back. The operational calendar is divided into two sessions: summer and indoor heated. Featuring more than 30 attractions, Schlitterbahn is home to unique water rides such as Dragon Blaster, essentially a water roller coaster, and Whitewater River and Aquaveyer, which turns the traditional lazy river into a whitewater rafting adventure. ![]() | Texas Seaport Museum & ELISSA Pier 21, Number 8 Galveston, TX • 409-763-1877 Visitors can delve deep into Galveston's nautical history at the Texas Seaport Museum. The centerpiece of the museum is the ELISSA, a three-masted, iron-hulled merchant barque built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Inside the museum, you can learn the history of ELISSA as well as how the tall ship was rediscovered and restored. Outside, you can tour the vessel; on the tour you'll try tying basic sailing knots, check out some of ELISSA's log books, and even see the officers' quarters, which are amazingly small. Back inside the Texas Seaport Museum, guests can also learn more about the area's shrimping industry and search the immigration database, which contains information on more than 133,000 immigrants who entered the United States via Galveston. ![]() | The Seawall Galveston, TX The Seawall runs for 10 miles between Ninth and 89th streets. When heading to the beach, many visitors cross the 17-foot-high seawall on their way to sand and surf. However, this architectural structure is more than just a barrier between land and sea. When viewed from the beach, the Seawall is covered by the SEE-WALL mural (touted as the world's longest mural), featuring aquatic scenes and Galveston landmarks from 27th to 61st streets.
