Want to live like a royalty on your next vacation? You can, while visiting the castles and castle hotels in Germany. During the Middle Ages, Germany was divided into many different feudal areas, each with its own burg (fortified castle), and some with the more opulent schloss (palace). These centuries-old castles can still be visited today, and make for a "wunderbar" history lesson for kids of all ages.

Many of these medieval castles have been turned into castle hotels. In fact, Germany now has more castle hotels than any other country in Europe. The best way to tour these often out-of-the-way castles is via car. Not surprisingly, the land of the autobahn is a great place to take a family road trip. Germany has made it easy to navigate your way back in time by following the Burgenstrasse (Castle Road) itinerary.

The 625-mile Castle Road is a west-to-east drive through the Southern German regions of Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria, leading you all the way to Prague in the Czech Republic. The vast majority of the 70 fortress castles and palaces along the Castle Road lie in Germany.

Follow the brown signs for Burgenstrasse, and you'll find yourself meandering peacefully from village to village in the rolling hills of the German countryside, passing castles dating back to the 12th century. The Burgenstrasse tourism office has created a map with all the towns on the suggested itinerary listed. Yet, bringing or renting a GPS is still a must to make the driving simpler.

Dungeons and dragons, kings and queens -- medieval times come to life as you walk the cobblestone streets and secret passageways of the Castle Road towns and fortresses. It's an enchanting and family-friendly journey into a well-preserved past. Driving Germany's Castle Road is a memorable vacation where history comes alive at every turn.
