While Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, may not be the original Six Flags theme park -- that distinction belongs to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington -- it is the largest among the company's 19 theme parks and water parks throughout North America, including locations in Mexico City and Montreal, as well as an additional park in China.

The park opened in 1974 under a different owner, and was purchased by Six Flags in 1977. Today, there are ten themed areas, as well as a neighboring water park, Hurricane Harbor. In 2013, Great Adventure became the world's largest theme park when it purchased and re-opened the former Wild Safari attraction.

Six Flags Great Adventure is well-known for its thrill rides, with 14 coasters and 52 other attractions. While your kids will be wowed by the newest rides showcasing state-of-the-art technology, you may appreciate the original rides that have operated since opening day. The 150-foot tall Big Wheel, for example, was one of the world's tallest at the time. A floral pattern made up of more than 15,000 lights is still displayed on both its sides. The Sky Ride was originally constructed for the 1964 World's Fair in Queens, New York, and was moved here for opening day. One of the world's few remaining double cable cars, it travels three quarters of a mile over the western section of the park.

This Six Flags is a seasonal park, open from late March through early September, with limited weekend and holiday hours before Memorial Day. In late September and October, it reopens on weekends for the "Fright Fest" Halloween event, and again in late November through December for "Holiday in the Park."
