Families will love:

  • Walkability of downtown

The capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is an industrialized city that's best known for its harbor, where everything from private charters to major cruise ships dock. Families can stroll the 1.5-mile Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk to take in views of all the vessels, including a real-life version of Theodore Tugboat, based on the popular children's TV series in Canada. And while the city very much appears modernized, there's a lot of history to be discovered -- you just have to dig a bit deeper.

For instance, go to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (located along the boardwalk) and your family will discover an exhibit called Titanic: The Unsinkable Ship. Why? When the Titanic sunk, the closest port was Halifax. The museum showcases findings from the infamous ship, including one of the deck chairs, a pair of shoes from a passenger, and even a mortuary bag.

Don't miss a visit to Five Fisherman Restaurant & Grill, either. It's upscale, but it's got a spooky past, having served as the mortuary for many of the ship's victims. For that reason, it's also rumored to be one of the most haunted buildings in Nova Scotia. Just up the hill from the museum and restaurant is Citadel Hill National Historic Park, which served as a fort in the 1700s.

That's another highlight of Halifax -- everything you'll want to see is located in the same area, making it easy to explore the capital city in a few days or even just one.
