Families will love:

  • Charming historical beach towns
  • Upscale shopping and dining

The Hamptons aren't just for the rich and famous. The area welcomes all families with soft-sand beaches, historical attractions, children's museums and beautiful scenery (which includes the oceanfront mansions you've seen on TV). In fact, families have been traveling to the Hamptons for more than a century -- many travel there to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Many people also travel to the Hamptons to explore the area's neighborhoods, each of which offer something unique -- you could easily spend a vacation in just one the neighborhoods (though you should try to explore all of them). The five main areas include Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Montauk.

Southampton is home to kid- and budget-friendly eateries, old churches and historical mansions, plus one of the main public beaches in the area. Bridgehampton has a wonderful children's museum and nature center. East Hampton's library is perfect for year-round activities for kids, plus the historical homes along Main Street are must-sees. Sag Harbor on the north end of the island has a marina filled with boats and yachts, and is home to the Whaling Museum, which offers more insight into the history of the industries that put these towns on the map. And Montauk is a true beach town, with a waterfront dock and one of the oldest lighthouses on the east coast mounting the tip of the town and the island.
