The centrally located Holiday Inn Express in Lake Elsinore with its indoor pool and free buffet breakfast was our jump off point for a long weekend in the Old West turned wine country of Temecula, California. The destination is only 80 minutes from more +Los Angeles but a world away. Highlights are: the Children's Museum featuring hundreds of crazy inventions by Professor Pennypickle, Western Days with Old West-style bank heists and shootouts; lunch in a turn-of-the-century bank turned reasonably priced Mexican Restaurant on the main drag in Old Town; hot air balloon rides over miles and miles of vineyards and grapefruit groves; quaint shops featuring candy we haven't seen since we were kids. The Wilson Creek winery is also a favorite with its out-of-this-world Almond Champagne. We immediately regretted only purchasing two bottles to take home. Also of note is the amazing food served at Raviolis Italian Bistro. During peak hours it's not a place for small children; however, we went early and the chef and staff made our kids feel special with simple but delicious pasta, homemade bread and wonderful deserts.

Our two small children had an amazing time and continue to talk about going back for seconds. This was a very cost effective trip and we really felt like we got away from it all.
