Harborview Pools
The hotel features an outdoor and indoor pool and hot tub, as well as an outdoor kiddie pool. I wasn't too fond of the blue outdoor carpet that covered the patio surrounding the pool, as it seemed dirty and just a hot bed for mold. I'd recommend the beach instead.
John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum
397 Main Street, Hyannis, 508-790-3077
The Kennedy clan has owned homes here for generations and the former president spent not only his boyhood years on the beaches of Cape Cod, but many documented vacations once he was in office. Pictures of him sailing with his family abound, and this museum highlights his time on the Cape. Children under 10 are free.
Hyannis Beaches
Hyannis is home to three beaches: Kalmus, Orrin Keyes and Veterans Park. While clean and beautiful, locals will tell you to head further down the road to Craigsville Beach in Centerville or Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable. Craigsville's long shoreline, gentle surf and nearby food shacks make it best for families visiting the Nantucket Sound beaches. Sandy Neck, bayside, is a coastal barrier beach that serves as a safe haven for endangered birds and wildlife. (The Audubon Society has a location here and provides kayaking, canoeing and hiking tours, as well. See Kayaking)
Hyannis Kayaking
345 Bone Hill Road, Barnstable, 508-362-7475
The Massachusetts Audubon Society runs various kayaking tours around Barnstable Harbor and Sandy Neck. Sunset and evening paddles provide glimpses into the Cape's fragile ecosystem, while families have fun gliding through the calm bay waters.
Cape Cod Potato Chips Factory Tour
100 Breed's Hill Road, Hyannis, 888-881-2447
Required eating while sitting on a Cape Cod beach, this local kettle potato chip manufacturer is open for tours. In fact, more than 250,000 enjoy the brief tour annually. Self-guided tours are free, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The factory is closed weekends and holidays.
Pirates Cove Adventure Golf
728 Main Street, South Yarmouth, 508-394-6200
The mac daddy of Cape Cod mini golf can be found at this South Yarmouth course, just a few miles up the road from Hyannis. Pirate-themed miniature golf includes caves, footbridges, waterfalls and pirate ships. Two 18-hole courses are available: Captain's Course or Blackbeard's Course, which means hours of play. Ice cream and merchandise are sold on premises. Open April through October, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the spring and fall, and until 10 p.m. in the summer.
