Pineapples
For casual fare, it's hard to top Pineapples, located next to the outdoor swimming pool and overlooking the bay. You can dine at tables on the patio or inside the pool area. The kids' menu features burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers and ice cream. This being Newport, there's also fresh tuna and swordfish sandwiches, scallops, lobster rolls and salads topped with grilled shrimp and salmon. The restaurant offers a top-shelf tropical drink selection and a thirst-quenching local microbrew on tap, Newport Storm Amber Ale.
Windward Restaurant
For more upscale dining, head to the Hyatt's Windward Restaurant. Start with their signature clam chowder, chock full of real clams. The pear and stilton salad is also tasty, served on a bed of spinach, and doused in olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. For entrees, try the freshly caught steamed lobster. The shrimp and scallop saute is topped with tomatoes, mushrooms and asparagus, and flavored with Marsala wine. Save room for dessert, like rich Boston cream pie or the restaurant's innovative cheesecake dumplings (sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, the dumplings are a hit with my daughter!). Or head outside to Five 33 Lounge on the sundeck and order S'mores to cook over the fire pit.
Brick Alley Pub
Off-property, the Brick Alley Pub on Thames Street is one of the more popular venues for locals. The large restaurant serves everything you'd possibly want for lunch and dinner, from pizza to pasta to sandwiches, burgers, steaks, and seafood. Barking Crab is the sister restaurant to the popular eatery in Boston's Fort Point. They have a similar menu, featuring lobster rolls, salads topped with seafood, fish and chip, burgers, and yes, crab. The Wharf Pub, located on Bowens Wharf, near the boats bobbing in the harbor is another find. Sit in a booth or on the outdoor deck and order lobster ravioli, burgers, sandwiches, and salads.
Chinese Tea House
For lunch, try something different and head to the Chinese Tea House, situated on the resplendent grounds of the Marble House. The Chinese Pagoda is now run by the Newport Historical Society and features sandwiches, salads and drinks. It's an ideal spot to dine after touring the Marble House or other mansions. Closer to the Tennis Hall of Fame is Katrina's Bakery and Deli, serving freshly made salads, sandwiches and baked goods that families can eat on their outdoor patio.
Breakfast
For breakfast, grab a cup of Starbuck's at the Hyatt's Galley or venture out. Two affordable options are Jonathan's Cafe on Washington Square and Gary's Handy Lunch on Lower Thames. Both offer typical breakfast fare like blueberry pancakes, eggs any way you like them, oatmeal and more.
