Exploring the Lake Champlain Byway in Vermont is something every family should do at least once. Located at the northern tip of Vermont, the driving destination offers a chance for families to truly disconnect (no, really -- Wi-Fi is spotty in many places) and enjoy the scenery. It's popular to simply bike or drive along Lake Champlain and explore the area's little villages, stopping in at museums, orchards, farms and family-friendly wineries and breweries.

Here's a sample itinerary to follow on your Lake Champlain Byway family vacation:

Vergennes
Start at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, Vermont, where you'll learn about the boats and people that sailed the lake from past to present, with the option to even build a boat of your own! Afterward, settle into Basin Harbor Club for a few nights. A true family resort, it features lakefront cabins, restaurants (and meal plans), lake swimming, a beach, and activities just for kids -- including a weekly carnival!

Shelburne
En route to Shelburne, Vermont, stop in downtown Vergennes for a bite to eat at 3 Squares Café or Vergennes Laundry. Then head to the Shelburne Museum for an afternoon. The unique living history museum is more like a village, with dozens of exhibits/buildings and green spaces on which to enjoy a picnic lunch. The following day, spend some time at Shelburne Farms, visiting the working farm's animals, seeing how cheese is made and eating at a farm-to-cart food truck. You might also consider overnighting at the Inn at Shelburne Farms, with awe-inspiring views of Lake Champlain. The farm, which covers 1,400 acres, feels like another world.

Burlington
After a day or two in Shelburne, head to Burlington, Vermont. Located on a hill that overlooks Lake Champlain, Burlington features Church Street Marketplace, with shopping and dining, and Waterfront Park, complete with an aquarium, boardwalk, and other opportunities to enjoy the lake.

South Hero
Drive to South Hero (you can also bike if your family is up for the 14-mile challenge) to enjoy more stellar views of the lake. Be sure to stop at Allenholm Farm for fresh maple creemees (Vermont for "ice cream cones"), farm animal interactions, and The Accidental Farmer Cafe, a food cart with more farm-to-table delicacies.
