What's a nice town to do if she sits geographically between two A-list travel spots: the zillion-things-to-do Lone Star State and New Orleans with her unbelievable architecture and fancy French Quarter?

Well, the locals of Lake Charles, Louisiana got to musing. What if they gussied up their home on the bayou with two knock-out casino resorts with elaborate water parks (so the whole family could enjoy the region), added several pristine golf courses, sprinkled in epic Cajun and creole dining, couple of pretty beaches, and -- for good measure -- 75 fabulous festivals to keep the place hoppin'. Well, then what?

Then the traveling-world might take notice.

The friendly town of Lake Charles sits in Louisiana's Cajun Country where long ago, the French settled and the pirate Jean Lafitte possibly buried treasure. Today the treasure comes in a more modern variety. Take the casino resorts. If you're only picturing slot machines and poker tables, you're missing the resorts' spectacular water parks, full-service spas, golf courses, and white-sand beaches.

Children will also love Lake Charles' charming three-story Children's Museum, Millennium Park with its enormous -- and super fun -- climbing structure, and the USS Orleck Naval Museum, where kids can play laser tag on a once active Naval ship. When kids are ready for more H20-fun, drive them to the family-friendly SPAR Waterpark where they'll be thrilled to see tube slides, a lazy river, a huge dumping bucket and so forth. The little guys still have energy to burn? Toss them into the trampoline park or the putt-putt golf center and let them go wild.

The over 75 festivals that happen each year in Lake Charles keep the party-atmosphere turned on high. Long considered the Festival Capital of Louisiana, don your costume and beads and try to get to the Lake Charles Mardi Gras. Or dress the kids in pirate garb and hit the Contraband Days Pirate Festival, matey. But for amazing food, you can't beat the Cajun French Music & Food Festival.

Every budget is welcome in Lake Charles. Sure, you have your 24/7 resorts, but you also have a plethora of moderately priced comfy hotels and several friendly value-stays.

Same with Lake Charles dining. Arrive hungry is a serious understatement. From pricey to affordable, Lake Charles is crazy with memorable dining spots. And, no, we haven't listed a McChain in the bunch. One restaurant is such a gourmand-must that you'd expect to find it in Paris or Napa, yet here it sits.

The Lake Charles locals want you to know that they're proud to have been "born in the boot," weren't raised in a swamp, love wearing shorts in December, and rave about their boudin and fresh cracklins. Their what? you ask. Pronounced, "boo-dan," it's Cajun for a meat, dirty rice, and spice combo. Cracklins are deep fried pork rinds sizzled in fat.

Treasure found.
