There's a lot to do in and around Lake George, New York that has nothing to do with crowded theme parks, overpriced entertainment, and pretentious resorts. That's why it's so great to spend several days there. If your family wants to relax and take a slow-paced getaway in a place that emphasizes affordable family fun, then Lake George and its surrounding towns - Queensbury, Bolton Landing, and Warrensburg -- really fits the bill.

You'll know that you're in the Adirondacks with one look at the tree-covered mountain ranges surrounding you on all sides. To get the best views of these, head up to the summit of Prospect Mountain, or take a boat ride to ogle the lake houses along the scenic shores. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound, such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and parasailing.

Although the local vibe is laid back, there are thrills to be had, especially at The Great Escape, A Six Flags Theme Park, and Water Slide World. Kids will always have something to do, even on rainy day, like playing mini-golf or laser tag at Fun Spot, bowling, or daring to step inside the House of Frankenstein Wax Museum.

Lake George, New York shines in the summer, when everyone wants to be in or on the lake. For that, there are two great public beaches, one of them voted among the 10 Best Beaches for Families in 2016. But it's really a year-round destination. The lake freezes, offering ice skating. You can ski or snow tube nearby, at Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg, and West Mountain Ski Resort in Queensbury. And the winter carnival in February attracts thousands of visitors.
