One of the real benefits of booking a room at the Square Phillips is the free continental breakfast served in the large private lounge on the second floor. There's fresh fruit, cereals and granola, bagels, waffles, and, of course, pain au chocolat and strong coffee.
Outside the hotel, your kids will be well taken care of. With its Frenchroots, Montreal is certainly one of the best cities on the continent for experiencing culinary delights. Start in Old Montreal, on the outdoor terrace of the city's best-known creperie, Le Jardin Nelson. Inside the brick facade off Jacques Cartier Plaza, a pianist and bassist play as folks dine on large sweet and savory crepes. They include Basilico, a chicken-parmesan offering, the Nelson, stuffed with apple, cinnamon, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, and a dessert crepe made with chocolate and bananas.
Reserve well in advance to book one of the two nightly seatings at the nearby Garde Manger. This small restaurant and bar favored by local foodies features a large selection of seafood like grouper, scallops, and oysters on the half shell. But it's the fresh salads and goat-cheese laden bruschetta that gets my kids all worked up.
For classic French bistro fare, it's hard to top L'Express in the Plateau District. You know this is the real thing as soon as you grab a table on the black-and-white checkerboard tiles and a waiter comes over with a jar of cornichons, tongs, and creamy mustard for dipping. The kids devoured the croque monsieur and steak frites while dad was quite pleased with the smooth soupe de poisson, served with a large spoon that one normally finds on the other side of the Atlantic.
One of Montreal's best known creations, the St-Viateur bagel, was our final lunch stop. Instead of heading to the original bagel store that opened in 1957, we opted for the cafe for a sit down breakfast of bagels and lox, washed down with a cafe au lait. The bagels are boiled, sweetened with honey, and then cooked in a large oven to form a smaller crispier version of a New York bagel.
