The best way to savor Quebec City is by walking. It takes us about an eight-minute walk from the hotel to stroll down the cafe-lined Grand-Allee (a good place for meals and snacks), past the Parliament buildings and through the St. Louis gate, a prime entryway to the upper part of the Old City.
In the Upper Town, we admire the river views as well as the jugglers and breakdancers on the Terrasse Dufferin, the wooden boardwalk behind the castle-like Chateau Frontenac. At the nearby Place d'Armes, horse-drawn carriage rides through the Old City are available.
To reach the oldest section of the historic area, the Lower Town, we walk down the Breakneck Stairs (Casse-Cou), which are actually not difficult to maneuver, although may have been more of a challenge long ago when their stones were looser. On previous visits, we've taken the funicular, an enclosed car that descends at a just-exciting-enough 45-degree angle to the Lower Town.
In the Lower Town, the Place-Royale Interpretation Centre (Centre d'interpretation de Place-Royale) shows a film about Champlain and early Quebec. In the Place-Royale (Royal Square), sometimes referred to as the "heart of the Old City," centuries-old stone buildings edge the street. Allow several hours to browse the Lower City's Museum of Civilization (Musee de la Civilisation).
In the afternoon, Loews Le Concorde's great location, adjacent to National Battlefields Park, is especially auspicious. We enjoy wandering the paths, admiring the flowerbeds surrounding the Joan d'Arc statue and taking in the views of the St. Lawrence River from the Martello Tower. Battlefields National Park, also known as the Plains of Abraham, is Quebec's signature park. For retro exercise and fun, the hotel also lends hula-hoops.
Back at the hotel in the late afternoon, we find several families splashing in the outdoor heated pool, situated on the fourth floor with a view of the park. The adjacent snack area has tables and cool drinks. At the nearby gym, kids can pedal two Fischer Price cycles while parents work out -- another convenient family-friendly element.
