Be sure to have at least one meal at L'Astral, the hotel's 27th-floor restaurant. If the view doesn't keep your kids happily occupied, the toys will. Not only does the round restaurant feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls, but L'Astral revolves -- a feature that especially intrigues grade-schoolers. Even though the dining room completes one revolution every 90-minutes, we, sensitive to motion, don't feel the place moving. And that's good. Panoramic views surround us. Turn one way and we see the river and National Battlefields Park. Turn another and we spot Chateau Frontenac and the Old City -- or don't turn at all and the view comes to us!
At L'Astral, voted "Best Hotel Restaurant" by Quebecois, Sunday brunch is especially popular with local (and visiting) families. The restaurant displays its impressive array of toys atop the piano. Tots can sit behind engaging tray tables with plastic frogs and scarlet macaws popping on springs, and toddlers can opt for placemats with disks to twirl and buttons to press as well as a bag of big blocks. Older kids can choose a Fischer Price digital camera for taking photos or a digital white board for sketching. Although not heavily advertised, the toys are always available -- just ask.
With a paying adult, infants to 6-year-olds eat for free at L'Astral, and their food arrives on plates colorfully decorated with giraffes, lions, dogs and other animals (plus the drink glasses are plastic). Children ages 7 to 12 may select items from a children's menu that doubles as a coloring book. The picture captions are in French, but that shouldn't matter too much.
The food's good too. The breakfast buffet serves crepes, waffles, cereal, eggs, croissants and more. At lunch and dinner there are chicken, fish and meat entrees.
Around the corner from the hotel, cafes line the Grand-Allee, the street leading to the Old City gates. On one afternoon, we pause at one of these for pastries and ice cream. For those seeking a familiar meal, McDonald's is here as well. On virtually every street in the Old City, there are cafes and restaurants. We enjoy our steak and frites (fries) at the Pub D'Orsay, in the heart of the Upper Town. Although there's no children's menu here, the chef is happy to make discounted half-portions of certain dishes.
In the Lower Town, Spag & Tini serves moderately priced pasta and pizza. In Au Petit Coin Breton, women wearing long skirts and the distinctive white Cape Breton-style caps serve crepes for entrees and for dessert.
