Located within the Virgin Islands National Park, Maho Bay Camps was the first of pioneering eco-lodging developer Stanley Selengut's several St. John earth-friendly properties. Built into the hillside overlooking the teal waters, the tents rest on wooden platforms so as not to disturb the land. The tents come with sleeping and cooking areas plus linens, towels, dishes, pots, utensils and a camp stove. The units accommodate three adults or two adults and two small children; however, since you must climb stairs to reach the tents, the facility may not be suitable for young children. Guests use communal bathhouses. Theres an onsite restaurant and snorkeling and kayaking off the beach.
At the sites Trash to Treasures Art Center, Maho Bays craft workshops, kids and adults can create pendants, fashion chimes and make paper from recycled items. Selenguts lease on the land will expire January 2012. Fundraising efforts are underway to purchase the land and maintain the camp.
