Hillside Summit

by smsmoot

We bought at Massanutten almost 20 years ago and had only been back a couple of times over the years despite paying the maintenance fees year after year. They now charge a resort fee which might be worth it during the busy seasons when all of the amenities are open, but in early November when most things are closed, it's not worth it at all. This being said, the resort has grown ALOT! The restaurants that have been added - Campfire Grill and Base Camp are really great for a nice dinner. The waterpark is a good addition for the kids - especially when the slopes and zip lines aren't open during our week. The Hillside units have been kept up pretty good. We stayed in 491 which had a nice view from the bedroom windows and plenty of privacy. Since our week is in early November, the entire resort was pretty quiet and there were quite a few things that were closed during the week. We still enjoyed a relaxing week and were rewarded with beautiful sunrises and colorful Fall foliage. Key points:

1. Internet service is adequate (WiFi). It can be spotty but it gets the job done.
2. The tv's in our unit were SMALL and are not HD. This being said, we weren't there to watch tv so we dealt with it.
3. The units are freakishly insulated! We quickly found that if we used the gas fireplace in the evening then we would need to open the doors to both decks to cool the unit down so we could sleep. (It was in the 40's and below at night.)
4. If you plan to cook, it might be helpful to take some pots and pans from home. There is only one frying pan, one small sauce pan, one large sauce pan and a dutch oven. This makes preparing breakfast a bit challenging.
5. Unit 491 has a good number of steps to get to the entry door. The unit at the other end of the bldg has very few.
6. There are ALOT of deer and they are very friendly. They aren't afraid of people and will just walk out into the road and not move out of the way. Go slow and be respectful of them. Don't feed them. This only makes it worse.
7. And finally, don't be deceived by the offer of a "free buffet breakfast" when you check in unless you want to lose 2 - 3 hours of your life that you will never get back. The free breakfast definitely involves a sales pitch whether you are already an owner or not.

We enjoyed our time here and will go back. The area is absolutely beautiful and the staff at the resort was very friendly, welcoming, and attentive.

Everything was great except our unit didn't have a washer and dryer which we were expecting and the staff couldn't give us exact location of a washer and dryer we could use. The place was clean and there were plenty of amenities. The kitchen could have had been stocked with more pots and pans and cookie sheets. The place was plenty large enough for my large family of 12.
