Mystic, CT Family Friendly Restaurants
32 West Main StreetMystic, CT 860-536-6336
This always-hopping spot in the center of Mystic might not have a formal children's menu, but that's only because most of its menu is a children's menu -- and we mean that in a good way. Crowd pleasing classics -- burgers, pasta marinara, steak frites and ribs -- are served in a welcoming atmosphere summarized by the giant pictures of cavorting monkeys on the walls. Reduced-sized portions of any menu item are available for the younger members of your party.

For those not initiated into New England lingo, "lobster in the rough" means boiled lobster -- and often steamed clams, crab cakes, and other regional seafood specialties -- served in their native environment on an open-air dock with a minimum of pretention and a full dose of atmosphere. Abbott's has been a paragon of the genre for more than a half-century, with countless awards for its fresh fruits of the sea, and none necessary for the scenery of sailboats and fishing boats that grace the collection of picnic tables on the harbor every summer evening.
105 Greenmanville AvenueMystic, CT 860-572-5303
When Mystic Seaport recently renovated its onsite restaurant, it took an upscale turn, with a sophisticated décor and a creative farm-to-table menu with a heavy complement of native seafood -- grilled Montauk swordfish with lemon verbena oil, divers scallops from next-door Stonington served over truffled risotto, and Mystic skate wings accompanied by shiitake mushrooms and polenta. Of course, being located at one of the region's prime family-friendly attractions its kids menu is just as extensive -- and healthy. For families seeking more casual fare, it also features a more laidback tavern room serving fried seafood, burgers, and lobster rolls.
56 West Main StreetMystic, CT 860-536-3700
Yes, that Mystic Pizza -- setting for the runaway late-1980s blockbuster that launched Julia Roberts' career. The downtown pizzeria is still living off the movie's fame, with the DVD played on repeat on a flatscreen in the entrance way, framed publicity stills (with an impossibly young looking Roberts) on the walls, and a merchandise shop with the restaurants logo printed on shirts, aprons, keychains, shot glasses and countless other memorabilia items. Of course, the movie wouldn't be nearly as popular if the pizza weren't so good, and regulars still line up with the tourists for the Zelepos family's famed "secret recipe," including the house specialty piled high with pepperoni, sausage, meatballs and veggies.
1 Holmes StreetMystic, CT 860-536-2674
Kids might turn their noses up at oysters, but they'll be happy at this bustling restaurant in the center of Mystic. Not only does it offer a full children's menu of all the kids' favorites, but it also gives parents the feel of an upscale restaurant that is still welcoming to families. Diners include day-boat cod, miso-ginger tuna, and salmon in caper sauce, served in a spacious, minimalist atmosphere. Better yet, it has just the right noise level; not so loud you can't talk to your partner, but not so quiet that the outbursts of the kids are likely to cause embarrassment. In addition to the big windows with a view of passing boats on the river, the restaurant boasts a spacious outdoor patio screened from the street by flower gardens.
