Naples and Marco Island Family Vacations
Families will love:
  • Water excursions abound, from dolphin cruises to jet ski eco-excursions
  • The largest of "Ten Thousand Islands"
  • Family-friendly hotels from luxury-priced to budget-friendly

Presenting a good dose of glitz and glamour, along with a laid-back beachy vibe, Naples and Marco Island on Florida's Paradise Coast offer a mix of sand and sophistication that's a surprisingly natural fit for families.

A favorite coastal getaway for the well-heeled since the Post Civil-War Era, Naples exudes a swanky style along with an alluring natural beauty. Known for its rich culture, from upscale art galleries to a fashionable Fifth Avenue shopping district, the Southwest Florida city also boasts a scenic side which attracts adventurers of all ages.

Abundant public beaches provide kids with plenty of space to play in the sun and the sand, while a swamp sanctuary, a botanical garden, an environmental learning center and a nature center offer hands-on activities and family programs.

The largest and northernmost of the Ten Thousand Islands, Marco Island radiates a relaxed rhythm that's friendly and welcoming to families. Spread out along a four-mile stretch of white sandy beach, and overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, luxury resorts and high-rise condos dot the coastline. Whether viewed from a penthouse suite or a causal cafe on the beach, Marco's spectacular sunsets are celebration-worthy.

A great way to get to know the local area and its residents is by taking an interactive tour. Water-bound choices range from a kid-friendly dolphin cruise to jet-ski eco-excursions, where you can explore mangrove forests and shell-laden barrier islands. Options for inland sightseeing include tours by Segway or by bike. Whatever your pleasure, be sure to slather on the sunscreen.

While dolphins and manatees might be the area's most frequently photographed stars, a number of other well-known personalities, from NBA players to a rock legend, also make their home on the sun-baked Paradise Coast. For those hoping to spot celebrities, January to April is high season. During this prime time, defined by rising rates and moderate temperatures, snowbirds flock to town, bringing with them plenty of posh company. Summers in Southwest Florida are hot and humid but the shoulder months of May and October can be a dream, with pleasant weather, lower rates and good availability.

With regard to lodgings, both Naples and Marco Island boast a number of highly-rated luxury resorts which are both luxury-priced and family-friendly. While resort rates can be steep, thoughtful amenities like free toys and beach gear help ease the sticker shock for families on a budget. Along with villas and boutique properties in both locales, family lodging options in Naples include a mix of moderately priced chain hotels which are refreshingly affordable.
