When travelers arrive on the island of Jamaica, they most often arrive via Montego Bay, a bustling city. However, for a more authentic getaway to the Caribbean nation that is considered the birthplace of reggae music, head west. The busy roads and traffic disperse and give way to roads so tiny they appear to have room for only one car at a time. Drivers may even have to stop and wait for a rather large cow to decide whether it wants to actually cross the street or just hang out! Then you'll feel you have entered the real Jamaica. Lush tropical landscape casts shadows on the roads, and provide protection when a rain storm passes through. Beaches are hidden along private coves with cliffs that jut out into the sea, providing the best perches for sunset watching.

Negril is more remote and less-commonly visited than Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, to the east. Resorts and hotels may be smaller, but their intimacy is what makes this area charming. You'll still find all-inclusive resorts with many of the same great packages and offerings as you would in the more populated areas of the island, just without the crowds. Walk along the roads to find a jerk chicken stand and speak to the locals. Take a skiff from Half Moon Bay to the island bar and restaurant, Calico Jack's, and watch the sun set. Throw on a snorkel and swim in the coves, or even better, stand in water so clear you can see the colorful fish swim without a snorkel. It's quiet in Negril, and you'll love sitting back and enjoying the scenery while the kids splash in the beautiful sea.
